- 1st METECH workshop – From deep-sea to coastal zones: Methods and Techniques for studying PalaeoenvironmentsPublication . Veiga-Pires, Cristina; Guillaume St-OngeReconstructing past climate and past ocean circulation demands the highest possible precision and accuracy which urges the scientific community to look at different sediment records such as the ones from coastal zones to deep-sea with a more complete set of technical and methodological tools. However, the information given by each tool varies in precision, accuracy and in significance according to their environmental settings. It is therefore essential to compare tools. With that in mind, and as part of the International year of Planet Earth, a workshop entitled `From deep-sea to coastal zones: Methods and Techniques for studying palaeoenvironments' took place in Faro (Portugal), from 25–29 February 2008.
- 2.P3. Cloning and gene expression of two novel stanniocalcin genes in the puffer fish Tetraodon nigroviridisPublication . Schein, V; Schein, Vanessa; Pinto, Patricia IS; Canario, Adelino V. M.Stanniocalcin 1 (STC1) is a hypocalcemic hormone first described in fishes. Recently a second gene (STC2) was isolated from mammals and fishes. However, in silico analysis of Tetraodon nigroviridis and Takifugu rubripes genomes revealed the presence of a third and a fourth gene. In this study STC1 was cloned from de Corpuscles of Stannius (CS), STC2 from the muscle, and the two novel genes identified, STC1B and STC2B from the brain of Tetraodon. The STC-1B gene encodes an ORF of 287aa and contains 11 conserved cyteine residues and the Nlinked glycosylation site, present in all identified STC1.
- 7th International ISEKI-Food Conference: next-generation of food research, education and industry. Book of abstractsPublication . Vieira, Margarida; Dubois-Brissonnet, Florence; Moussa, Marwen; Venskutonis, Rimantas; Costa, Rui; Chrysanthopoulou, FoteiniAs part of its mission, ISEKI-Food Association establishes and maintains a network among universities, research institutions, and companies in the food chain in addition to working to ensure that food studies are of high quality. However, we must also begin planning how to gear science, education, and the food industry to meet the needs of future generations as well as how to contribute to the sustainability of our planet by these food actors. In light of this, the 7th International ISEKI-Food Conference, which had as main theme “NEXT-GENERATION OF FOOD RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY”, focused on future challenges in education on food science and technology, in research activities related to processing, quality and safety, packaging of foods and in societal engagements in the field divided in three main sections: EDUCATION: CHALLENGES OF EDUCATION IN A CHANGING WORLD; RESEARCH: NEXT GENERATION OF FOODS; and SOCIETY ENGAGEMENT: SOCIETY AND FOOD INDUSTRY. The conference was dedicated to all food actors, creating bridges among them. The delegates had the opportunity to exchange new ideas and experiences face to face, to establish business or research relations, and find global partners for future collaborations.
- A background-priority discrete boundary triangulation methodPublication . Loke, R. E.; Jansen, F. W.; du Buf, J. M. H.Discrete boundary triangulation methods generate triangular meshes through the centers of the boundary voxels of a volumetric object. At some voxel configurations it may be arbitrary whether a part of the volume should be included in the object or could be classified as background. Consequently, important details such as concave and convex edges and corners are not consistently preserved in the describing geometry. We present a "background priority" version of an existing "object priority" algorithm [6]. We show that the ad hoc configurations of the well-known Discretized Marching Cubes algorithm [13] can be derived from our method and that a combined triangulation with "object priority" and "background priority" better would preserve object details.
- A biological sound source localization modelPublication . Azarfar, A.; du Buf, J. M. H.In this paper we address sound source localization in the azimuthal plane. Various models, from the cochlear nuclei to the inferior colliculi, are implemented to achieve accurate and reliable localization. Coincidence detector cells in the medial nuclei and cells sensitive to interaural level difference in the lateral nuclei of the superior olive are combined with models of V-and I-type neurons plus azimuth map cells in the inferior colliculus. An advanced cell distribution in the inferior colliculus is proposed to keep ITD functions at any frequency within the physiological range of the head. Additional projections from the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and the medial nucleus of the superior olive are modeled such that interaural time differences in different frequency bands converge to a single result. Experimental results demonstrate good performance in case of a variety of normal sounds.

- A comparison of four data selection methods for artificial neural networks and support vector machinesPublication . Khosravani, Hamid Reza; Ruano, Antonio; Ferreira, P. M.The performance of data-driven models such as Artificial Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines relies to a good extent on selecting proper data throughout the design phase. This paper addresses a comparison of four unsupervised data selection methods including random, convex hull based, entropy based and a hybrid data selection method. These methods were evaluated on eight benchmarks in classification and regression problems. For classification, Support Vector Machines were used, while for the regression problems, Multi-Layer Perceptrons were employed. Additionally, for each problem type, a non-dominated set of Radial Basis Functions Neural Networks were designed, benefiting from a Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm. The simulation results showed that the convex hull based method and the hybrid method involving convex hull and entropy, obtain better performance than the other methods, and that MOGA designed RBFNNs always perform better than the other models. - A computational model to simulate the thermal behaviour of the passengers compartment of vehiclesPublication . Conceição, Eusébio; Silva, M. C. G da; André, J. C. S.; Viegas, D. X.In this paper a computational model developed with the objective of simulating the thermal behaviour of the passengers' compartment of vehicles is presented. The model is based on the space-integral energy balance equations for the air inside the compartment and for the main vehicle bodies and surfaces. It can solve two kinds of problems. In the first one, calculates the heat stress that the air conditioning or heating system must equilibrate, in order to satisfy predefined permanent regimen project specifications. In the second one, once imposed a particular air conditioning system and given the ambient conditions, it computes the different temperatures and heat fluxes either in transient or steady regimens. The validation of this model was done with a railway car, in a summer situation, when it was immobilized and running. The model reproduced well the experimentally determined temperature and heat fluxes evolutions. However, the numeric simulation showed a best agreement with the experimental results when the convection heat transfer coefficients, determined experimentally in this work, were used. - A computer vision based web application for tracking soccer playersPublication . Rodrigues, J. M. F.; Cardoso, Pedro; Vilas, Tiago; Mendes Da Silva, Bruno; Rodrigues, Pedro; Belguinha, António; Gomes, CarlosSoccer is a sport where everyone that is involved with it make all the efforts aiming for excellence. Not only the players need to show their skills on the pitch but also the coach, and the remaining staff, need to have their own tools so that they can perform at higher levels. Footdata is a project to build a new web application product for soccer (football), which integrates two fundamental components of this sport's world: the social and the professional. While the former is an enhanced social platform for soccer professionals and fans, the later can be considered as a Soccer Resource Planning, featuring a system for acquisition and processing information to meet all the soccer management needs. In this paper we focus only in a specific module of the professional component. We will describe the section of the web application that allows to analyse movements and tactics of the players using images directly taken from the pitch or from videos, we will show that it is possible to draw players and ball movements in a web application and detect if those movements occur during a game. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

- A distributed load scheduling mechanism for micro gridsPublication . Monteiro, J. M.; Eduardo, J.; Cardoso, Pedro J. S.; Semiao, J.Several protocols have recently been defined for smart grids that enable the communication between electric devices and energy management systems. While these protocols and architectures can already be applied in different fields of micro grids, it is still not clear how the distributed resources and constraints of such electrical grids can be managed in an optimum way. In order to achieve a reduction in electricity costs and maximizing investments made in renewable sources, an optimization mechanism should be used to perform load scheduling, considering different variables such as forecasted power generation curve from renewable sources, different tariffs' rates, electric circuit constraints, user restrictions and correspondent comfort levels. Given these considerations, this work defines and evaluates a distributed micro grid resource management architecture and protocol which is able to optimize load scheduling while considering all the mentioned restrictions and parameters. The proposed architecture was implemented on a multi-agent simulator and the performed tests show that significant reductions in electricity cost can be achieved using this methodology. © 2014 IEEE.
- A framework for blood flow analysis and researchPublication . Ruano, Maria; Da Cruz Silva Andrade Madeira E Carvalho De Moura, Maria Margarida; Leiria, A.; Garcia, F.; Moreno, E.A framework to support research and clinical applications on ultrasound Doppler blood flow signals' analysis was created by integration of several subsystems into a portable computer application. Several alternatives of the different subsystems were integrated allowing the comparison amongst them. Aiming initially the study of carotid artery blood flow signals, the framework is being extended to encompass different vases -such as the mean cerebral artery - and some cardiac valves -such as the aortic and mitral valves. Developed upon Debian Linux distribution, but portable to other operating systems, the application components considered were built from open source software.
- A genetic linkage map of the hermaphrodite teleost fish Sparus aurata L.Publication . Bargelloni, L.; Franch, R.; Patarnello, T.; Tsalavouta, M.; Sarropoulou, E.; Magoulas, A.; Kotoulas, G.; Chatziplis, D.; Georgoudis, A.; Louro, Bruno; Power, DeborahThe gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) is a marine fish of great importance for fisheries and aquaculture. It has also a peculiar sex-determination system, being a protandrous hermaphrodite. Here we report the construction of a first-generation genetic linkage map for S. aurata, based on 204 microsatellite markers. Twenty-six linkage groups (LG) were found. The total map length was 1241.9 cM. The ratio between sex-specific map lengths was 1:1.2 (male:female). Comparison with a preliminary radiation hybrid (RH) map reveals a good concordance, as all markers located in a single LG are located in a single RH group, except for Ad-25 and CId-31. Comparison with the Tetraodon nigroviridis genome revealed a considerable number of evolutionary conserved regions (ECRs) between the two species. The mean size of ECRs was 182 bp (sequence identity 60–90%). Forty-one ECRs have a known chromosomal location in the pufferfish genome. Despite the limited number of anchoring points, significant syntenic relationships were found. The linkage map presented here provides a robust comparative framework for QTL analysis in S. aurata and is a step toward the identification of genetic loci involved both in the determination of economically important traits and in the individual timing of sex reversal.

- A hybrid autonomous robot navigation method based on artificial intelligence and soft computing techniquesPublication . Kiss, L.; Varkonyi-koczy, A. R.; Ruano, M. GraçaThe main problem to be solved for autonomous indoor robots is that the environment where they have to move safety is only partially known and possibly dynamically changing. In this paper a hybrid navigation method is proposed, using two techniques that deal with a priori information and sensory data separately, thus blending the intelligence and optimality of global navigation methods with the reactivity and low complexity of local ones. The first, global navigation module, based on a priori information, chooses intermediary goals for the local navigation module, for which the so called A* algorithm is used. The second part, carrying out the (local) navigation relying on sensory data, applies a fuzzy-neural representation of an improved potential field based guiding navigation tool. Vision based obstacle detection is implemented by difference detection based on a combination of RGB and HSV representations of the pixels. Copyright (C) 2003 IFAC.
