Abstract(s)
Alcohol abuse among university students is a public health problem that requires effective preventive interventions. One strategy that has gained prominence is peer education, which uses the social influence of students themselves to promote healthy behaviors. This study investigates the effectiveness of the approach, exploring how training peer educators can reduce alcohol consumption and strengthen empowerment in the university environment. General objective: The study investigated the effectiveness of peer education programs as a strategy to prevent alcohol abuse among university students. Specific objectives: 1) To identify effective peer education practices; 2) To identify the psychosocial characteristics of peer educators; 3) To analyze the impact of the interventions on the participants' perception of self-efficacy and empowerment. Method: The research was carried out through three studies, firstly a systematic literature review study, followed by a study of the implementation of a six-week training course, focusing on the development of skills for the prevention of risk behaviors associated with alcohol consumption, and lastly a study evaluating the effectiveness of the intervention. Participants engaged in weekly sessions, receiving an e-book as support material. Evaluation measures were applied before and after the intervention to analyze knowledge about alcohol, level of consumption and perception of social empowerment. Results: The initial study highlighted the underuse of peer education and the lack of a clear theory in current programs. The psychosocial analysis revealed that the perception of self-efficacy and empowerment was strengthened, positively impacting the participants' behavior and their ability to influence their peers. The intervention resulted in a significant increase in knowledge about alcohol consumption and risk identification skills among the students. Conclusion: The study reaffirms the importance of peer education as an effective tool for preventing alcohol abuse among university students. Self-efficacy and social empowerment are key components for the success of these interventions, which must be supported by a solid theoretical foundation and ongoing training to ensure their sustainability and positive impact.
