- Arte figital: taxonomia e análise das dimensões híbridas na experiência estética contemporâneaPublication . Ribeiro Caldeira, Nelson Francisco; Veiga, Pedro Jorge Agostinho Alves da; Cordeiro, João Miguel Magalhães Marcelino FernandesThis article examines the integration of physical and digital elements in contemporary artistic expression, introducing the term phygital art, derived from the concept of phygital. This term describes hybrid experiences that combine tangible and virtual components. Phygital art represents a collaborative fusion between the physical (phy-) and digital (-gital), wherein both components mutually influence one another, enabling new forms of artistic expression and audience engagement. To analyze these dynamics, a taxonomy is proposed, comprising six main categories: physical-digital integration, audience engagement, interactivity, bodily involvement, sensory experience, and conceptual depth. This framework provides a comprehensive evaluation of the diverse facets of the phygital experience, grounded in theories from authors such as Manovich, Grau, Dewey, and Veiga, among others. To test the robustness and validity of this taxonomy, it was applied to three representative works: Rain Room, The Treachery of Sanctuary, and Unnumbered Sparks. These works were analyzed comparatively, highlighting their unique positions within the phygital spectrum. The application of this taxonomic model proved effective in identifying the balance between physical and digital components and assessing audience involvement on multiple levels. A classification table and radar chart provide a clear visualization of each work’s position, illustrating their varied approaches. The flexibility of this taxonomy establishes it as a valuable tool for analyzing and understanding phygital art, supporting innovation and interactivity in a context where the tangible and virtual increasingly converge in complex and meaningful ways.
- Artistic chronicles of the modern age: exploring contemporary cultural expressionsPublication . Derkach, Sivtlana; costa, susana; C. Martins, Ana Filipa; de Queiroz Carneiro Dourado, Ana PatriciaA research of modern cultural expressions has become an essential study of our shared human experience in a time marked by technological acceleration, dissolving geographical borders, and significant social shifts. The discussion of modern cultural expressions helps us navigate the reality. Cultural expres - sions reflect current conditions while also shaping the future. They preserve historical memory while innovating new modes of storytelling. They provide frameworks through which we can process, interpret, and respond to our rapidly evolving world. This issue of ROTURA brings together a diverse collection of research that explores the multifaceted dimensions of contemporary culture: linguistic and intercultural communication, digital media transformation, innovative theatrical spaces, evolving role of producers in artistic creation, the application of artificial intelligence in public relations, the impact of art education on socialization in multicultural settings. Drawing from linguistics, cultural studies, media studies, psychology, sociology, art history, cinema theory, political science, communication studies, information technology, theatre studies, and education, the collection spans several disciplines. The rich geo- graphical variety of this collection provides perspectives from areas sometimes under-represented in worldwide academic debate on cultural studies.

- Development of the beliefs in human nature uniqueness scale and Its associations with perception of social robotsPublication . Giger, Jean-Christophe; Piçarra, Nuno; Pochwatko, Grzegorz; Almeida, Nuno; Almeida, Ana Susana Rocio Gonçalves de ; Costa, NeuzaThere is an actual trend for humanizing technological artifacts, especially social robots. However, human-like social robots trigger negative attitudes by threatening human uniqueness as well as humanness. The present paper presents the development of the Belief in Human Nature Uniqueness Scale (BHNUS) to assess the individual tendency to deny social robots the possibility to have human features considered to be the hallmarks of humanness. The validation of the BHNUS was completed along seven studies, with a total of 1044 Portuguese participants. Results showed that BHNUS had good structural qualities (Studies 1 and 2), as well as good convergent and discriminant validities. BHNUS was correlated with negative attitudes towards robots, religiosity, and interest for science fiction (Study 3), attribution of traits of warmth to robots (Study 4), positive and negative emotional appraisal (Study 5), perspective taking (Study 6), and attitudes towards the development of robots with human features (Study 7). The importance of the BHNUS regarding the development of social robots and human–robot interaction is discussed. If you were to insist I was a robot, you might not consider me capable of love in some mystic human sense, but you would not be able to distinguish my reactions from that which you would call love so what difference would it make? - EditorialPublication . Conceição, Manuel CélioFifteen years after its first issue, the European Journal of Language Policy (EJLP) has a change of editor! I have the privilege to assume this function and I am very proud to succeed Mike Kelly, the editor since its inception. Our mission is to show the results of research on complexities of languages policies, meant broadly as languages beliefs, practices, choices and uses and their impact, fostering informed discussion and innovative thinking in the field. This issue features three papers and three interventions, offering diverse perspectives on language policy and its impact across different regions and institutions. Each contribution provides a deep dive into the specific linguistic and policy-related challenges of its respective context.
- From concept to exhibition: on the creative process of an AI-driven stereoscopic video installationPublication . Amorim, Marta; Many, ÉricThis paper explores the creative process surrounding spectral spaces, an AI-driven video installation that reinterprets stereoscopic imaging through contemporary digital techniques. By combining generative AI with optical principles, the work challenges conventional visual perception, creating an unstable, fluctuating field of engagement. The installation adopts a structured viewing approach that encourages an individualized interaction, heightening awareness of the act of seeing. Through a juxtaposition of historical apparatuses and algorithmically generated imagery, it examines the evolving relationship between materiality and digital intangibility. Audience responses gathered during its exhibition provided insights into the perceptual dynamics at play, revealing how the interplay of stereoscopy and artificial intelligence fosters sustained exploration and introspection. The findings suggest that this approach not only expands the expressive possibilities of stereoscopic media but also raises critical questions about the mediation of vision through technology, illustrating how reimagined historical techniques can inform and transform contemporary artistic practices.
- From print to pixels: prototyping a virtual exhibition for the Faro museum poster collectionPublication . Martins, Alexandre; d'Orey, Rui; Mendes da Silva, Bruno; Carrega, JorgeIn 2022, CIAC - Research Center in Arts and Communication and the Faro Municipal Museum began a cooperation to study, enrich and disseminate a unique poster collection that belonged to the Portuguese scenographer Joaquim António Viegas. It comprises 330 illustrated posters from the cinema, circus and advertising industries. This partnership entails the coproduction of multiple exhibitions about the collection, but also future research of the materials that form this important heritage. One of the objectives/aims of this work is to develop a website which will collect and present the information about the poster collection, while also serving as a platform to show virtual exhibitions of the same collection. In this paper we present the initial stages of the development of a 3D real time exhibition which is intended to open simultaneously with a physical exhibit of the posters dedicated to early Italian cinema - scheduled to be inaugurated in March of 2024. We will describe some of the first steps we have taken so far which covers the exploration of tools devoted to building 3D environments, the tasks we already achieved and lay down a couple ideas for the future of this project. We hope the prototype we present here might function as a model and a proof of concept for digital representations and reinterpretations of future exhibits of this singular legacy.
- Interconnected pathways and prospects: exploring the synergies between literary geography, tourism, and educationPublication . Quinteiro, SílviaThe inclusion of maps in literary works has been a long-standing phenomenon throughout the history of books. This practice is commonly observed on book covers, where maps emphasize the significance of spatial elements within the work. Moreover, maps are frequently found within the pages of books, serving to illustrate the directions provided by the writer and assisting the reader in navigating the narrative. These maps can take the form of either real or imaginary depictions, with a higher prevalence in travel literature and works set in fictional realms. However, beyond these explicit maps, readers also engage in the creation of mental maps as they follow the journeys of characters or mark physical locations associated with the lives of authors. The amalgamation of these various cartographic representations derived from literary geography forms the basis for literary tourism, enabling the development of products and experiences that not only serve as valuable resources for tourists but also possess significant educational flexibility. Within this chapter, we critically examine the nature of literary geography and the construction of literary cartography and explore its diverse range of applications, supplemented by current studies and relevant case examples.
