- 3D Modeling of the Milreu Roman Heritage with UAVsPublication . Rodrigues, José Inácio; Figueiredo, Mauro; Bernardes, João Pedro; Gonçalves, CésarIn this paper we present a methodology to build a 3D model of a roman heritage site in the South of Portugal, known as Milreu, covering a region of about one hectare. Today's Milreu ruins, a national heritage site, were once part of a 4rd century, luxurious villa-style manor house, which was subsequently converted into a thriving farm. Due to its relevance, it is important to make the 3D model of the Milreu ruins, to be available for the exploration in the Web and for virtual and augmented reality applications for mobile devices. This paper demonstrates the use of UAVs for the reconstruction of the 3D models of the ruins from vertical and oblique aerial photographs. To enhance the model quality and precision, terrestrial photographs were also incorporated in the workflow. This model is georeferenced, which give us the possibility to automatically determine accurate measurements of the Roman structures.
- 7th International ISEKI-Food Conference: next-generation of food research, education and industry. Book of abstractsPublication . Vieira, Margarida; Dubois-Brissonnet, Florence; Moussa, Marwen; Venskutonis, Rimantas; Costa, Rui; Chrysanthopoulou, FoteiniAs part of its mission, ISEKI-Food Association establishes and maintains a network among universities, research institutions, and companies in the food chain in addition to working to ensure that food studies are of high quality. However, we must also begin planning how to gear science, education, and the food industry to meet the needs of future generations as well as how to contribute to the sustainability of our planet by these food actors. In light of this, the 7th International ISEKI-Food Conference, which had as main theme “NEXT-GENERATION OF FOOD RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND INDUSTRY”, focused on future challenges in education on food science and technology, in research activities related to processing, quality and safety, packaging of foods and in societal engagements in the field divided in three main sections: EDUCATION: CHALLENGES OF EDUCATION IN A CHANGING WORLD; RESEARCH: NEXT GENERATION OF FOODS; and SOCIETY ENGAGEMENT: SOCIETY AND FOOD INDUSTRY. The conference was dedicated to all food actors, creating bridges among them. The delegates had the opportunity to exchange new ideas and experiences face to face, to establish business or research relations, and find global partners for future collaborations.
- A comprehensive approach for optimizing controller placement in Software-Defined NetworksPublication . Schutz, G.; Martins, JaimeSoftware-Defined Networks (SDNs) are characterized by dividing a network architecture in a data plane (i.e., any packet-relaying nodes like switches or routers) and a control plane, where specialized controllers assign forwarding decisions to the underlying data plane, and must do so in a very short timeframe. Thus, controllers play a key role in SDNs and the Controller Placement Problem (CPP) becomes a critical issue, affecting network delays and synchronization. If there are significant propagation delays between controllers and nodes, or among controllers, their ability to quickly react to network events is affected, degrading reliability. In this work, we propose a comprehensive mathematical formalization of the CPP, which constrains propagation latency and controller capacity, and determines simultaneously the minimum number of controllers, their location and the assignment of nodes to each, while keeping a balanced load distribution among controllers. As CPP is NP-hard, a heuristic approach is also presented. Simulations for 60 network scenarios show that this approach obtains balanced and resilient solutions, in negligible time, which are proven to be optimal or near optimal for 90% of the evaluated cases.

Not only the players need to show their skills on the pitch but also the coach, and the remaining staff, need to have their own tools so that they can perform at higher levels. Footdata is a project to build a new web application product for soccer (football), which integrates two fundamental components of this sport's world: the social and the professional. While the former is an enhanced social platform for soccer professionals and fans, the later can be considered as a Soccer Resource Planning, featuring a system for acquisition and processing information to meet all the soccer management needs. In this paper we focus only in a specific module of the professional component. We will describe the section of the web application that allows to analyse movements and tactics of the players using images directly taken from the pitch or from videos, we will show that it is possible to draw players and ball movements in a web application and detect if those movements occur during a game. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

- A deep neural network video framework for monitoring elderly personsPublication . Farrajota, Miguel; Rodrigues, João; du Buf, J. M. H.The rapidly increasing population of elderly persons is a phenomenon which affects almost the entire world. Although there are many telecare systems that can be used to monitor senior persons, none integrates one key requirement: detection of abnormal behavior related to chronic or new ailments. This paper presents a framework based on deep neural networks for detecting and tracking people in known environments, using one or more cameras. Video frames are fed into a convolutional network, and faces and upper/full bodies are detected in a single forward pass through the network. Persons are recognized and tracked by using a Siamese network which compares faces and/or bodies in previous frames with those in the current frame. This allows the system to monitor the persons in the environment. By taking advantage of parallel processing of ConvNets with GPUs, the system runs in real time on a NVIDIA Titan board, performing all above tasks simultaneously. This framework provides the basic infrastructure for future pose inference and gait tracking, in order to detect abnormal behavior and, if necessary, to trigger timely assistance by caregivers.
- A distributed load scheduling mechanism for micro gridsPublication . Monteiro, J. M.; Eduardo, J.; Cardoso, Pedro J. S.; Semiao, J.Several protocols have recently been defined for smart grids that enable the communication between electric devices and energy management systems. While these protocols and architectures can already be applied in different fields of micro grids, it is still not clear how the distributed resources and constraints of such electrical grids can be managed in an optimum way. In order to achieve a reduction in electricity costs and maximizing investments made in renewable sources, an optimization mechanism should be used to perform load scheduling, considering different variables such as forecasted power generation curve from renewable sources, different tariffs' rates, electric circuit constraints, user restrictions and correspondent comfort levels. Given these considerations, this work defines and evaluates a distributed micro grid resource management architecture and protocol which is able to optimize load scheduling while considering all the mentioned restrictions and parameters. The proposed architecture was implemented on a multi-agent simulator and the performed tests show that significant reductions in electricity cost can be achieved using this methodology. © 2014 IEEE.
- A practical method for setting coastal water quality targets: harmonization of land-based discharge limits with marine ecosystem thresholdsPublication . Tosic, Marko; Martins, Flávio; Lonin, Serguei; Izquierdo, Alfredo; Dario Restrepo, JuanThe Caribbean Sea provides significant ecosystem services to the livelihood and well-being of countries in the region. Protection of the marine ecosystem requires policy on coastal water quality that considers ecologically-relevant thresholds and has a scientific foundation linking land-based discharges with seawater quality. This study demonstrates a practical method for setting local-scale coastal water quality targets by applying this approach to Cartagena Bay, Colombia, and setting targets for end-of-river suspended sediment loads to mitigate offshore coral reef turbidity. This approach considers reef thresholds for suspended sediments and applies a field-calibrated 3D hydrodynamic-water quality model (MOHID) to link the marine thresholds to fluvial loads. Monitoring data showed that suspended sediments were consistently above the coral reef ecosystem threshold of 10 mg/l, and the model adequately reproduced field observations. It was shown that ecosystem thresholds could be maintained within the extent of the bay by reducing suspended sediment loads in the Dique Canal from current load estimates of 6.4 x 10(3) t/d (rainy season) and 4.3 x 10(3) t/d (transitional season) to target loads of 500-700 t/d, representing reductions of similar to 80-90%. These substantial reductions reflect ongoing issues in the Magdalena watershed which has experienced severe erosional conditions and intense deforestation over the past four decades. The presented method is practical for countries without access to long-term datasets, and could be applied to other parameters or discharge types. The method is particularly beneficial for developing site-specific targets, which are needed considering the natural and anthropogenic variability between different coastal zones and water bodies.
- A QoS Solution for Three-Dimensional Full-HD H.264/MVC Video Transmission over IP NetworksPublication . Bento, Diogo M.; Monteiro, JânioTridimensional video streaming has recently drawn significant attention from users and content providers. This has led to an implementation of 3D transmission over IP networks that extend the legacy 2D solution to support multiple views within each image. More recently, a Multiview Video Coding amendment of the H.264 standard has been approved which, among other applications, is being used on the encoding of 3D content in Blu-ray discs. This latter solution has shown to be capable of improving the compression ratio when compared with the Side-by-Side encoding, by exploring inter-view redundancies. In this paper, we evaluate the challenges of encoding and transmitting 3D content in MVC, for Full HD content distribution over IP networks. We also design and evaluate a Weighted RED queuing mechanism for QoS capable networks based on the MVC structure is capable of improving the quality of the received video.
- A structured growth model for Cynara cardunculus cell suspensionPublication . Cabral, Paula Pires; Lima Costa, Maria Emília; Cabral, J. M. S.In this study a model was developed to describe the growth of Cynara cardunculus L. suspended cells as a function of the availability of two substrates, sucrose as the carbon and energy source and phosphate. It was assumed that the maintenance energy need was fulfilled by the consumption of extracellular carbohydrates, in nonlimiting conditions, or by the consumption of structural biomass when sucrose is depleted. A production of secondary metabolites was also assumed. This model was developed based on a structured model previously described by Van Gulik et al. (1993). The model was applied to the experimental results of C. cardunculus suspended cells grown in a Gamborg B-5 medium supplemented with 2% sucrose, using a non-linear regression program.
