- It's online, it's news: appropriation of viral narratives by the digital pressPublication . Martins, Ana; Novoa Fernández, Olivia; Aguaded, Ignacio; Tavares, MirianAt the crossway between information and entertainment, memes and newsgames are some of the news formats which, made viral in social networks, complement the informational experience and compete with the traditional news media in constructing alternative readings of the real. If in the light of Bakhtin (2002), journalism can be understood as a secondary discursive genre that feeds on primary genres (pp. 61-62), how is one to understand the circulation of these discourses produced from journalistic events in social networks? On the other hand, how are these narratives appropriated by the media? What functions do they play in media discourse? In this article we present some examples of products created from events of political impact. Thereafter, we discuss, by the analysis of a set of news stories, how the digital press, in the Iberian context, makes use of them. The purpose of this article is to contribute to the reflection on how the news media relate to these new narratives.
- Olhares e vozes da mudança social. Perspectivas de investigação dos jornais cinematográficos em Portugal e Espanha antes e depois da revolução e transição democráticaPublication . Martins, Ana; Fernández, OliviaValiosos registos do ponto de vista histórico e objetos de estudo desafiadores quanto às linguagens fílmicas, os jornais cinematográficos são testemunhos de um paradigma de produção e acesso à informação vigente em variados países sobretudo na primeira metade do séc. XX. Em Portugal e em Espanha foram utilizados nos regimes Franquista e do Estado Novo com fins claramente propagandísticos. Mas, se em Espanha a queda da ditadura marcou a sua extinção, em Portugal a sua produção manteve-se para além da Revolução, período durante o qual ganhou até um certo fôlego. A comunicação que se apresenta dá conta de alguns aspetos da análise de umcorpusde jornais cinematográficos produzidos em Portugal e em Espanha antes e depois da revolução/ transição para a democracia. A partir da leitura de um conjunto de imagens do NO-DO, do Jornal Português e do Jornal Cinematográfico Nacional, são apontadas algumas afinidades e diferenças, quer no que concerne as características dos jornais dos dois países, quer, numa perspetiva diacrónica, as suas abordagens à atualidade e aos seus atores sociais, que dão conta das evidentes transformações sociais que os jornais cinematográficos testemunham. Ilustrativo das diferentes abordagens dos jornais é o papel social atribuído à mulher que, no JCN, por exemplo, acompanha uma reconfiguração estética ao ceder a voz às protagonistas da reportagem. O olhar sobre as imagens convida ainda a um ponto de situação sobre a investigação ibérica produzida neste âmbito.
- Efficiency determinants in Portuguese banking industry: an application through fractional regression modelsPublication . Martins, AnaThe participation in the Euro area and the current financial crisis substantially conditioned the development of the Portuguese banking industry, for which is expected a continuous fall in income and a growing competitive pressure, improving the need to look carefully to issues as efficiency as an essential survival factor. Efficiency indicators of the main banks operating in Portugal were measured through DEA methodology. The application of two-stage models allowed circumventing the usual problems inherent to the coexistence of the production and intermediation approaches. The application of regression for proportions, more appropriate than traditional linear and Tobit regressions, to deal with the fractional nature of the DEA scores, allowed the identification of efficiency determinant factors for the main banks operating in Portugal. The fractional regression models demonstrate evidence of improved specification comparing to traditional regression models. The variables that appear to major influence on overall efficiency are internationalization, size and type of ownership of capital.

Fernández, Olivia; Martins, AnaDurante os regimes ditatoriais de Portugal e Espanha, os jornais cinematográficos fo- ram meios particularmente úteis na veiculação dos valores do Estado e na construção de uma ideia de consenso. A saída desses regimes foi diferente nos dois países da Península Ibérica, como foi também diverso o rumo que o género tomou, já muito perto da sua extinção, nos anos de consolidação democrática. No presente capítulo propõe-se uma leitura de algumas reportagens deste período.
