They allow the automation of department activities, make information available to users at the right time, and support more accurately their decision-making needs. Many organizations have recognized this limitation and consequently felt the need to implement specific solutions to their industry, sector, or line of business. From the collected case study business drivers and objectives, the authors analyze the advantages and limitations of ERP Systems in the hospitality industry in order to understand how this industry uses ERP Systems and solves the challenge of integrating information spread through several heterogeneous information systems.

Publication . Salinas Fernández, José Antonio; Azevedo, Paula Serdeira; Martín Martín, José María; Rodríguez Martín, José Antonio
Tourism destination competitiveness is a multidimensional concept that is widely studied in the academic literature, but multiple factors make its measurement a difficult task. In this article, we design a synthetic index to rank the 80 countries that attract the majority of international tourists by level of tourism competitiveness. In order to do this, we use all of the simple variables included in the 2017 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, proposing a new methodology for the construction of this synthetic index, which it solves the problems of aggregation of variables expressed in different measures, arbitrary weighting and duplicity of information; issues that remain unresolved by the TTCI. Likewise, we analyse the most influential dimensions in tourism competitiveness. Air transport infrastructures, cultural resources and ICT readiness are the key dimensions that explain the main disparities.

  • Can they manage in a sustainable way? The role of international destination awards in beach management
Publication . Yılmaz, Emine; Perna, Fernando; Serdeira Azevedo, Paula; Custódio, Maria João; Çeken, Hüseyin
This study aims to reveal the perceptions of local beach destination managers about the level of sustainability in their management practices. This research puts into practice a comparative study assessing two beach destinations: Mugla, located in Turkey, which won the World Travel Award, and Algarve, located in Portugal, which is a member state of the European Union (EU) that has also repeatedly won the same award. In this context, in-depth interviews were held with tourism offices in selected destinations and qualitative data were obtained through semistructured interviews that were carried out between February and April 2020. As a study outcome, two hypotheses were elected and analysed: "the two regions' sustainable managerial practices differ " and "no difference exists between the regions. " Both regions won the same award, but the EU Algarve destination is still winning the award, whereas the non-EU Mugla destination is not. The findings can be shared with beach destination managers to create or increase their sustainability awareness. No studies were found that compared the sustainable management of award-winning EU and non-EU beach destinations. Because of this gap in the literature, this study will add value to the literature about this topic.

Publication . Ribeiro, Conceição; Rocha Silva, Carolina; Serdeira Azevedo, Paula; Pires Rosa, Manuela
Information and communication technologies, or ICT, have revolutionized societies' daily lives and the economy's development on a global scale. Senior tourism is considered a sector in solid expansion, and, as such, it matters to understand the importance that these tourists attribute to these technologies. The association between tourism and digitalization gave rise to the concept of "smart tourism". So, it is essential to have the necessary skills to be active in a world mediated by the internet. It is not just tourist destinations that have evolved in the present digital age; tourists, themselves, have also changed. However, this digitalization has not equitably reached the entire senior population. The main goal of this article is to analyze the internet use by older tourists to plan their trip to the Algarve before the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. It has the specific objective of identifying and exploring what type of service they sought the information. The results indicate that there are statistically significant differences between different groups of respondents regarding the use of the internet to plan a trip to the Algarve.
  • Key factors in tourism management to improve competitiveness in Latin America
Publication . Guaita Martínez, José Manuel; Serdeira Azevedo, Paula; Martín Martín, José María; Puertas Medina, Rosa María
Purpose This paper analyzes tourism competitiveness in Latin America, providing a country-level ranking of tourism competitiveness. The study also identifies which areas of management to focus on in order to increase competitiveness in each case. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on the variables used by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to measure tourism competitiveness. The DP2 distance method is used to create a synthetic indicator. This method helps identify which areas best explain differences in competitiveness between countries. Findings In tourism, the most competitive Latin American countries are Costa Rica, Chile, Panama, Mexico and Uruguay. The areas that best explain the differences between countries relate to cultural and natural resources, the implementation of information and communication technologies (ICTs), international openness and transport infrastructure. These are therefore priority areas for tourism managers. Practical implications This paper provides detailed analysis for each country. The situation in each country is presented in terms of the key areas highlighted by the analysis. This approach can aid the individual decisions of companies and public managers, thus enhancing tourism competitiveness. This greater competitiveness can strengthen the tourism sector, which is crucial in uncertain times. Originality/value Based on a synthetic indicator, this research offers the first country-level analysis of tourism competitiveness in Latin America. The study is also novel in its ability to detect the areas where action should be taken to improve tourism competitiveness. This analysis offers an alternative to the WEF Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), which has certain weaknesses. The results can help enhance tourism competitiveness in Latin American countries through the specific recommendations presented in this paper.
