- Education matters: cumulative advantages and disadvantages amongst Portuguese older menPublication . Vilhena, Carla; Valadas, Sandra T.; Almeida, António Fragoso deOur paper sought to analyse the influence of the educational background over various dimensions of the lives of Portuguese older men (age 60+) across the life course. Drawing on the theory of cumulative advantages and disadvantages we used biographical research, namely narrative interviews with men from different educational background: men with a very low educational background and men with a medium/high educational background. Our results show the influence of educational background in the life course, and how it can contribute to accumulation of advantages/disadvantages that explain their biographies and the very different situations in which they live today.

- Students’ voices at a Portuguese University: academic motivation and its relationship with academic successPublication . Valadas, Sandra T.; Ribeiro Gonçalves, Fernando; Faísca, Luís; Vilhena, CarlaIn this paper the authors will try to point out some evidences that emerged from the data collected in the year of 2000 by the Permanent Observatory for Teaching and Learning Quality of the University of Algarve. Data presented here will report exclusively to students’ representations concerning the institution, themselves, their teachers and the curriculum, since we consider that students are the privileged informants about their own academic experience. The main topic explored refers to students’ evaluation of the influence of academic motivation on the abandonment of studies in higher education. Theoretical framework will also be presented. We will present some behavioral symptoms that students evaluated as relevant indicators of lack of academic motivation. Also, the analysis will concern the meanings students attribute to academic failure as well as students’ points of view about their own failure, according to their academic experience.
- Transitions to retirement: perceptions of Portuguese older menPublication . Valadas, Sandra T.; Vilhena, Carla; Almeida, António Fragoso deIn this paper we present results based on the project Old Guys Say Yes to Community. We interviewed 90 men in southern Portugal between 60 and 93 years of age. Our main aim was to understand how older men experienced their transitions from work to retirement. We clarify the concept of transition and the models that explain transitions in the life course perspective. There are a number of factors to consider during the processes of retirement. Also, not much is known about the role of education and learning during the transition process. We try to contribute to the field, reflecting on the learning processes that result from this transition. Our findings show that work is one of the most crucial dimensions to consider in transitions to retirement (despite the fact that we identify many others). But education and learning do have an immense impact on the lives of older adults, either negative or positive.
