- Allgarve events: Implications for the Algarve imagePublication . Manuela Guerreiro, Maria; Pinto, Patrícia; Mendes, JúlioLocated in the south of Portugal, the Algarve belongs to the top twenty travel destinations worldwide, with a local economy relying strongly on tourism-related activities. The Allgarve programme was launched in 2007 and is an umbrella brand that aims to reposition the Algarve as a refi ned tourism destination with glamour. Allgarve is a set of cultural, artistic and sports events off ered mainly during the summer season. Based on data from a questionnaire carried out with 282 foreign tourists who visited the Algarve, this study identifi es and profi les clusters of tourists based on their perceptions of Allgarve. In addition, we analyse to what extent the image of the Algarve has changed as a consequence of the Allgarve events. The results show that most respondents agree with the Allgarve brand name, report a positive perception of the campaign, and agree that it has a positive impact for the Algarve differentiation. However, the results suggest that the majority of tourists still come to the region attracted by the Algarve brand, and that this brand has not been aff ected by the Allgarve programme's content. Th e fi ndings of this study are important in understanding the implications of events in repositioning strategies of mature tourism destinations.

- Co-creating animal-based tourist experiences: Attention, involvement and memorabilityPublication . Campos, Ana Cláudia; Mendes, Júlio; Valle, Patrícia Oom do; Scott, NoelIn this study co-creation, defined as a tourist's subjectively lived on-site experience involving actively participation and interaction, is found to enhance attention, involvement, and memorability. A conceptual model of on-site co-creation is proposed and empirically tested in the context of two experiences with dolphins in a marine life park. Results were analysed using SEM and reveal that co-creation significantly influences attention and involvement and also that the higher levels of attention and involvement generated are associated with memorability. - Co-creation experiences: attention and memorabilityPublication . Campos, Ana Cláudia; Mendes, Júlio; do Valle, Patricia Oom; Scott, NoelThis study examines the on-site co-creation experience from a tourist perspective. A review of the literature and in-depth interviews with tourists who participated in a 'swimming with dolphins' experience are used to explore the importance of co-creation in enhancing attention and the memorability of the experience. Findings suggest that the co-creation experience influences memorability by focusing the tourist's attention. This study contributes to the conceptualization of co-creation in the field of tourism by substantiating the usefulness of a psychologically based approach to experience design.
- Cultural and creative tourism: the case of ‘Celebrations’ in the Algarve RegionPublication . Manuela Guerreiro, Maria; Henriques, Cláudia; Mendes, JúlioThis study sought to investigate the importance of cultural and creative tourism associated with 'celebrations' (i.e., festivais, festas, feiras and even to s [festivals, feasts, fairs and events]) in the Algarve region of Portugal. The resulting paper first discusses the significance of cultural and creative tourism and its interconnections with sustainable development in a region traditionally linked with 'sun and sea' tourism products. The methodological framework was a case study that focused on links between cultural and creative tourism and the dynamics of celebrations in 16 Algarve municipalities (concelhos municipais). The study was based on content analysis of data gathered with a questionnaire distributed to camara municipal (city council) culture and/or tourism responsibles from the 16 Algarve municipalities, namely, those (technicians) whose jobs are related to enhancing the attractiveness of the cultural resources associated with celebrations. The results reveal an increasing recognition of the importance of cultural patterns to municipals' tourism offers based on popular and everyday culture, which contribute to the Algarve's authentic identity and heterogeneous features.
- Designing tourist experiences in the countrysidePublication . Agapito, Dora; Pinto, Patrícia; Mendes, JúlioThe rise of the experiential paradigm in conceptualizing tourism has directed special attention to the five senses - sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch - in designing tourist experiences. Additionally, a multidisciplinary literature approach shows the importance of all the senses in human perception, suggesting multiple sensory experiences in geographical encounters, such as in tourism destinations. In the countryside, tourist experiences are highly based on a diversified collection of undeveloped resources, offering multiple sensory stimuli that can be managed in order to design and enhance tourist experiences and bolster natural resources, in a view to a sustainable local development. This study aims to understand the role of human senses in designing tourist experiences in the countryside. A survey was presented to tourists in rural lodgings. Sensory experiences emerged from a content analysis followed by a multiple correspondence analysis, suggesting that sensory information is suitable for theming tourist experiences in rural areas. Practical implications are discussed.
- Destination image: perspectives of tourists vs. residentsPublication . Agapito, Dora; Mendes, Júlio; Pinto, PatríciaThis study aims to measure the image of Lagos in the Algarve region, the most important Portuguese destination, using a cognitive, affective and behavioral approach. Given the lack of studies which compare the perspectives of tourists and residents, the empirical investigation includes a mixed methodology enabling a holistic approach followed by a quantitative methodology with the use of questionnaires for both tourists and residents. The attributes that are more consensually associated with Lagos are the good weather and good beaches, although these variables do not have significant discriminatory power for "recommendation of the destination to friends and family" as the dependent variable.

- Destination Image: Tourists' perspective versus residents' perspectivePublication . Agapito, Dora; Mendes, Júlio; Patrícia, Patrícia Oom doThe study of destination image has been asserting itself as an instrument of differentiation, helping to increase the destinations competitiveness. Despite being a well-documented topic in the literature, there had been a lack of studies to compare the perspectives of tourists with the residents. The main objective of this study is to measure the image of Lagos in the Algarve region, the most important Portuguese destination, comparing the perspectives of tourists and residents in a cognitive, affective and behavioral approach. The empirical investigation included a mixed methodology. First, in an exploratory phase, the analysis of open-ended questions allowed to detect the attributes for the analysis of the cognitive component, enabling a holistic approach. Then, the use of questionnaires to a sample of 379 tourists and 378 residents provided a quantitative methodology, using descriptive indicators, hypotheses tests and the multivariate CHAID technique. Results indicate a positive global destination image in the perspective of both stakeholders. The attributes more consensually associated with Lagos are the „good weather‟ and „good beaches‟, although these variables have not significant discriminatory power for the dependent variable „recommendation of the destination to friends and family‟, in the CHAID analysis. Thus, in the tourists‟ perspective, the „interesting cultural heritage‟ is the most significant explanatory variable, while for the residents this is translated into „good value for money‟. In the emotional approach, both stakeholders associate the destination to the adjectives “arousing/exciting/pleasant”.
