- Immunocytochemistry of somatotrophs, gonadotrophs, prolactin and adrenocorticotropin cells in larval sea bream (Sparus auratus) pituitariesPublication . Power, Deborah; Canario, Adelino V. M.The chronological appearance of endocrine cells in the pituitary of sea-bream (Sparus auratus) larvae was studied using antisera against salmon prolactin, trout growth hormone, salmon gonadotropin and Nterminal human adrenocorticotropin. The larval pituitary (1-12 days after hatching) was oval in shape and was composed of a dense mass of cells with few neurohypophysial fibres. By 60 days after hatching it began to resemble the adult and was divisible into a distinct rostral pars distalis containing prolactin and adrenocorticotropin cells; a proximal pars distalis containing somatotrophs and gonadotrophs and a pars intermedia. Cells immunoreactive with antisera against growth hormone were observed immediately after hatching (2 days postfertilization). Weakly staining prolactin cells were observed 2 days later in the region corresponding to the rostral pars distalis. Cells immunoreactive with antigonadotropin and anti-adrenocorticotropin sera were observed in the pituitary 6 and 8 days after hatching, respectively. All the cell-types studied were immunoreactire from the time they were first identified until the final samples 90 days after hatching.
- Deep-water macroalgae from the Canary Islands: new records and biogeographical relationshipsPublication . Haroun, R. J.; Prud'homme van Reine, W. F.; Müller, D. G.; Serrão, Ester; Herrera, R.Due to the geographical location and paleobiogeography of the Canary Islands, the seaweed flora contains macroalgae with different distributional patterns. In this contribution, the biogeographical relations of several new records of deep-water macroalgae recently collected around the Canarian archipelago are discussed. These are Bryopsidella neglecta (Berthotd) Rietema,Discosporangium mesarthrocarpum (Meneghini) Hauck, Hincksia onslowensis (Amsler et Kapraun)P.C. Silva, Syringoderma floridana Henry, Peyssonnelia harveyana J. Agardh, Cryptonemia seminervis(C. Agardh) J. Agardh, Botryodadia wynnei Ballantine, Gloiocladia blomquistii (Searles) R. E.Norris, PIahchrysis peltata (W. R. Taylor) P. Huv4 et H. Huv4, Leptofauchea brasiliensis Joly, and Sarcodiotheca divaricata W. R. Taylor. These new records, especially those in the Florideophyceae,support the strong affinity of the Canary Islands seaweed flora with the warm-temperate Mediterranean-Atlantic region. Some species are recorded for the first time from the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean, enhancing the biogeographic relations of the Canarian marine flora with that of the western Atlantic regions.
- Age and growth of megrim, Lepidorhombus boscii, Risso of the portuguese continental coastPublication . Castilho, Rita; Dinis, Maria Teresa; Erzini, KarimThe first study of age and growth of four-spotted scaldfish, more commonly known as megrim (Lepidorhombus boscii, Risso), an important (by catch ) species of the Portuguese trawl fishery from the Atlantic coast is presented. The analysis was based on data obtained from a total of 609 specimens sampled between 1985 and 1986. Otoliths were used for age determination. The Von Bertalanf~, growth parameters were estimated using the non-linear fitting method: Lt (females)=440[ 1 -e -°-14(t+ 1.32) ] and Lt= 375 [ 1 -e -°~4(t+ 1.93) ] for males. L~ and to values are significantly different. The megrim grows allometrically (slope of length-weight regressions > 3 ). Females live longer and gain weight at a faster rate than males. Differences in growth between sexes become more apparent from the second year onwards.
- 3-Hydroxy-2,6-dinitroacetophenone: an unusual substitution pattern resulting from nitration of 3-hydroxyacetophenonePublication . Cristiano, Maria Lurdes Santos; Johnstone, Robert A. W.; Pratt, M. J.Nitration of 3-hydroxyacetophenone gives 2,6-dinitro-3-hydroxyacetophenone, C8H6N206, in which the nitro groups have entered the sterically least favourable positions in the aromatic nucleus. None of the expected substitution in the 4-position was observed. The two nitro groups flanking the carbonyl side chain are different in that one is in the plane of the aryl ring but the other is twisted well out of the plane.
- Cloning and characterisation of a fish aldolase B genePublication . Llewellyn, Lynda; Ramsurn, Vimi P.; Sweeney, Glen E.; Wigham, Trevor; Santos, Cecilia; Power, DeborahA full length cDNA clone representing an aldolase mRNA was isolated from a sea bream (Sparus aurutu) liver cDNA library. Sequencing of this clone revealed it to encode a 364 amino acid protein with 74% amino acid identity to human aldolase B and slightly lower similarity to human aldolase A and C. In view of the sequence data and of Northern blot analysis showing strong expression of a 1.6 kb transcript in liver it was concluded that the cloned gene represents aldolase B. This clone represents the first aldolase gene to be sequenced from any fish species thus providing new data on the evolution of the vertebrate aldolase gene family.
- Functional expression of the human CHIP28 water channel in a yeast secretory mutantPublication . Laizé, Vincent; Rousselet, G.; Verbavatz, J. M.; Berthonaud, V.; Gobin, R.; Roudier, N.; Abrami, L.; Ripoche, P.; Tacnet, F.The temperature-sensitive Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutant strain NY17, deficient in the secretory pathway (sec6-4 mutation), is used for the heterologous expression of the human CHIP28 water channel. After a heat-shock, the protein is present in partially purified post-golgi secretory vesicles, lmmunodetection and water transport studies, directly made on the vesicles, showed that CHIP28 is highly expressed and active in the yeast membranes.
- A comparison of monofilament gillnet and small hook longline selectivity in a multispecies artisanal fishery in the Algarve, Southern PortugalPublication . Erzini, Karim; Santos, M. S.; Bentes, L.; Lino, Pedro G.As part of ongoing studies concerned with the small-scale fisheries of the South of Portugal, experimental fishing was carried out with monofilament gillnets and small hook longlines within the same area. Sixty-two species were caught, of which 20 were common to both gears. Pronounced differences in terms of the relative importance of different species in the catches were observed. Size selection patterns also differed, with highly overlapped hook catch distributions and few species showing evidence for size selectivity. In contrast, strong selectivity was characteristic of species which tend to be "wedged" in gillnets. Whereas smaller stretched mesh sizes (particularly 40 and 50 mm) caught significant numbers of illegal sized fish, this was minimal in the longlines. Some implications for management are discussed.
- Distributional success of the marine seaweed Fucus vesiculosus L. in the brackish Baltic Sea correlates with osmotic capabilities of Baltic gametesPublication . Serrão, Ester; Kautsky, L.; Brawley, S. H.To understand the unique success of the marine seaweed Fucus vesiculosus L. (Phaeophyceae) in the brackish Baltic Sea, the performance of gametes from Baltic [4.1-6.5‰S (Salinity)] and marine populations was studied. Sperm from Baltic F. vesiculosus swam with a path velocity of c. 30-110 μm/s and could fertilize eggs in waters of salinities from 4 to 33‰S. In their natural water, Baltic sperm were not negatively phototactic, unlike marine sperm in seawater; this should decrease the sperm:egg concentration at the seafloor and reduce the likelihood of polyspermy. Marine (Iceland, Sweden) sperm in seawater had a path velocity of c. 80-100 μm/s, but performed poorly and could not fertilize eggs in natural or artificial Baltic water ≤‰S; therefore, Baltic populations have adapted or acclimated to their brackish habitat. Baltic populations appear better adapted to their natural low salinities because, even after culturing Baltic and marine individuals in water from both the Baltic (6.5‰S) and the marine Skagerrak (21‰S), Baltic sperm were in both cases still able to swim and fertilize eggs at lower salinities (4‰S) than marine sperm; fertilization never occurred between marine gametes at 4-6‰S. However, F. vesiculosus acclimates to some salinities, since sperm from Baltic and marine males that had been cultured at 21‰S swam better (higher velocity, proportion that were motile and/or linearity) in marine salinities (21-33‰S) than when they were cultured at 6.5‰S. The effects of salinity on sperm motility and fertilization were osmolar rather than due to specific ionic requirements, over the tested range. The osmolalities (< c. 100 mmol/kg) at which fertilization success of Baltic gametes decreases nearly to zero correspond to the osmolality of Baltic water at the northernmost limit of distribution of F. vesiculosus in the Baltic Sea. Therefore, the present range of F. vesiculosus in the Baltic appears to correspond to the osmotic tolerance of the gametes. Very small natural or anthropogenic increases in ambient osmolality would be likely to cause a substantial expansion of this species into the inner Baltic.
