- 3D printing with silicone filling: Creation of an anatomical hand modelPublication . Pinheiro, João; Luz, L.; Seiça, E.; Silva, L.; Gonçalves, R.; Sousa, J. Paulo; Boeiro, H.To develop and evaluate a low-cost anatomical hand and wrist model produced by FDM 3D printing with silicone filling, calibrated using radiographic and CT data, and to assess its anatomical fidelity, imaging realism, mechanical durability, and suitability for training in musculoskeletal radiology, orthopedics, and anatomy education.
- 3D Printing: A new dimension for anatomy educationPublication . Pinheiro, João; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; Magalhães Ribeiro, Anabela de; Gonçalves, R.; Luz, L.; Seiça, E.; Gonçalves, M.; Sousa, J. Paulo; Silva, L.The purpose of this pedagogical practice was to evaluate the feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and educational value of three-dimensional (3D) printed anatomical models in the teaching of human anatomy. Advances in medical imaging and 3D printing have enabled the conversion of CT and MRI data into physical models, offering new opportunities to enhance spatial understanding, tactile learning, and student engagement beyond traditional two-dimensional resources [1–4].
- Abdominal Ultrasound Phantom – A potential training toolPublication . Pinheiro, João; Magalhães Ribeiro, Anabela de; Ribeiro, Luís PedroThe purpose of this educational intervention was to evaluate the effectiveness of abdominal ultrasound phantoms as a simulation-based learning tool in the training of Medical Imaging and Radiology students. Abdominal ultrasonography is a highly operator-dependent modality, yet undergraduate training is often limited by restricted patient access, ethical considerations, and reduced opportunities for supervised practice [3,6]. Simulation-based learning offers a safe and reproducible environment for hands-on training, supporting experiential learning and skill acquisition [3,4].
- Analysis of radiological examination request forms in a radiology departmentPublication . Gonçalves, S. R.; Caldeira Lagem Abrantes, António Fernando; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; do Espírito Santo Rodrigues, Sónia Isabel; Pinheiro, João; Magalhães Ribeiro, Anabela de; Almeida, R. P. P.Clinical information in the Radiology department is an important tool to perform correct imaging studies, and adjust the exam to the anatomical region and clinical suspicion. Due to limited time and high workflow in diagnostic departments, immobilization devices, and communication barriers with patients, it may be difficult to identify the region under study, adjust the study to the patient's condition, and perform the scan properly. Thus, the emergency room physicians and other medical referrals should provide as much information as possible so the radiographers, radiologists, and sonographers can perform the requested exam and clarify any clinical suspicion. Proper communication with clinicians before an examination is essential to provide patient-centered healthcare. The present study aimed to evaluate the existence or absence of clinical information in the examination requests forms in a radiology department.
- Anatomical regions and Body Mass Index: A Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) problemPublication . Romão, C.; Caldeira Lagem Abrantes, António Fernando; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; do Espírito Santo Rodrigues, Sónia Isabel; Pinheiro, João; Almeida, R. P. P.The aim of this study is the analysis of SAR during MRI scans, and correlate them with gender, Body Mass Index, type of pulse sequence, acquisition time and the radiofrequencies applied on pulse sequences, and also the anatomic area.
- Anticholinergic burden in elderly people in nursing homes: cross-sectional assessment using ACB calculator and CRIDECO anticholinergic load scalePublication . Nascimento, Tânia; Matos, Maria Ana; Pinto, EzequielBackground/Objectives: Anticholinergic burden is an important risk marker in older adults, associated with cognitive decline, falls, and increased mortality. This study aimed to assess anticholinergic burden in institutionalized elderly individuals using two tools (ACB calculator and CALS—CRIDECO Anticholinergic Load Scale), as well as to analyze its relationship with pharmacotherapeutic variables like polypharmacy. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted by analyzing the pharmacotherapeutic profiles of institutionalized elderly individuals (≥65 years) utilizing individualized medication preparation services from a community pharmacy in Alentejo (Portugal). Participants agreed to the study and had complete, up-to-date pharmacotherapeutic profiles. Results: The pharmacotherapeutic profiles of 75 institutionalized elderly people were analyzed; the sample comprised mostly women (72%) who had experienced excessive polypharmacy (≥10 medications) (56%) and had an average age of 85.62 ± 7.62 years. It was found that 90.7% (ACB) and 89.3% (CALS—CRIDECO) of the elderly had anticholinergic burden, with mean values of 3.60 ± 2.84 and 3.33 ± 2.51, respectively. Women exhibited higher anticholinergic burden in unadjusted analyses (p < 0.05). The burden correlated moderately with the total number of medications (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The results show high exposure to anticholinergic medications in the institutionalized elderly population, reinforcing the rationale for systematic therapeutic reviews focused on the pharmacological safety of institutionalized older adults in community pharmacies.
(Mayer, 2005, 2010).
- Assessment of anatomical changes by pulmonary Angio-CT resulting from pulmonary thromboembolismPublication . Costa, I.; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; Caldeira Lagem Abrantes, António Fernando; do Espírito Santo Rodrigues, Sónia Isabel; Pinheiro, João; Azevedo, K. B.PTE (Pulmonary Thromboembolism) is the third most common cause of cardiovascular death, with more than 600,000 cases per year in the US. This pathology has a wide spectrum of presentations and severity, with some patients experiencing shock, requiring urgent thrombolysis, while others can be safely treated on an outpatient basis with anticoagulation treatments alone (John, Marti Poletti, Perrier, 2014). The degree of pulmonary arterial obstruction and the previous cardiorespiratory status determine the hemodynamic consequences of PTE, the elevation of pulmonary pressure is insignificant until the obstruction of the pulmonary arterial bed is greater than 30–50%, whereby above this threshold it increases rapidly, causing an elevation of pulmonary vascular resistance and consequently significant pulmonary hypertension with enlargement of the proximal arterial vessels, resulting in an afterload on the right ventricle and therefore its dilation. (Bryce, Perez-Johnston, Bryce, Homayoon, & Santos -Martin, 2019; John, et al., 2014). The main objective is to assess the anatomical changes that may be present in patients diagnosed with PTE. In order to be able to reach the main objective of the work and answer the pre-defined research questions, there was a need to also define specific objectives, which consisted of analyzing which alterations were the most evidence of the presence of PTE; relate verifiable anatomical alterations through pulmonary Angio-CT with gender; relate verifiable anatomical alterations through pulmonary Angio-CT with age; to relate the curvature of the interventricular septum and the dilation of the right ventricle and also to relate the dilation of the pulmonary artery trunk and the dilation of the right ventricle.
- Assessment of the morphology of the supraspinatus muscle tendon by conventional ultrasound and ultrasonographic elastographyPublication . Dolores, M. C.; Ribeiro, Luís Pedro; do Espírito Santo Rodrigues, Sónia Isabel; Caldeira Lagem Abrantes, António Fernando; Pinheiro, João; Vicente, B.Shoulder pain is one of the most common complaints among volleyball players, with the supraspinatus muscle tendon being one of the most susceptible to injury in this type of sport. The movement of the shoulder joint is highly demanding, and the energy involved is relatively high, which affects and exceeds its physiological limits, resulting in rotator cuff tendinopathies, which include the supraspinatus muscle tendon. Ultrasound, a noninvasive technique, is essential for detailed musculoskeletal injury evaluation.
