- Approaches to personal transformation in tourism researchPublication . Zhang, Xiaoyu (Nancy); Scott, Noel; Campos, Ana CláudiaThe study of tourism transformation is evolving with five different research streams identifiable, studying personal transformation, social transformation, transformative service design, and transformation related to destinations or tourism as a whole. This paper examines the evolution of these five approaches and contrasts their disciplines, theory and assumptions through a review of 310 journal articles. Each of these five approaches views the ‘self’ as the object that is transformed with variations within them as to what aspects of the self-change. The key issue then is how the self is interrelated with the ‘triggers’ of transformation. In this review, three triggers commonly identified (meaning, emotion, and reflection) are examined in detail. Understanding how personal transformation occurs is vital as topics, such as experience design, transformative tourism services and societal transformation are based on this.
- Asymmetric connectedness among regional green economies, carbon markets, and oil shocksPublication . Hanif, Waqas; El Khoury, Rim; Gubareva, Mariya; Teplova, TamaraThis study investigates spillovers among the US, Europe, and Asia green economies, carbon allowances and oil price shocks in 2010–2023. We segregate oil shocks in demand-, supply-, and risk-driven price movements. The TVP-VAR methodology is applied to model the dynamic interrelationships among the markets. Our static connectedness outcomes highlight a substantial role of the US and European green economy and the demand-driven shocks as emitters of innovations to other markets. It is found that European green economy is the main innovations contributor to global carbon allowances whereas the demand-driven oil shocks dominate in transmitting spillovers to others. We demonstrate that major economic events make connectedness increase. Our asymmetry analysis reveals a heightened susceptibility of the system to negative news, with the impacts of negative spillovers overcoming those of positive ones. The dynamics of spillovers emphasize how crucial it is to take into account both the time and the sign. Our research advances understanding of the complex relationships within the green-carbon-oilshocks system. The results are potentially useful for risk managers and investors, as they allow the creation of effective risk management plans.
- A bibliometric analysis: wine tourism in the sectorPublication . Gómez-Carmona, Diego; Marín-Dueñas, Pedro Pablo; Correia, Marisol B.; Escobar, Marta Toribio; de Matos, Nelson Manuel da Silva; Cruces-Montes, Serafín JesúsThe term “wine tourism” was first used in 90’s from Australia. The definition of ecotourism has been studied by many academics throughout its history, reaching the conclusion that it is the activities carried out by people outside their usual environment in a given period of time related to the viticulture of the environment and wine. This study aims to enhance knowledge in the wine tourism field by employing bibliometric methods to quantitatively analyze its evolution over the past two decades. This analysis shows that from 2019 onwards, publications increased considerably, reaching a peak in 2020, mostly (linking with COVID-19 lockdown). In the areas of geography and economics, as research in the area of tourism is still very recent. The conceptual analysis shows the variety of terms used by researchers and how they have evolved over time, the most commonly used being "touristic" and "vineyard", with others appearing such as "meal" connected to "winery waste" or "tourism development", which are more akin to current management.
- Broadening tourism experience and destination imagePublication . Martins Guerreiro, Maria Manuela; Pinto, Patrícia; Bagheri, Fatemeh; de Matos, Nelson Manuel da SilvaAlthough previous studies deal with tourism experience, destination image and related outcomes, this study innovates by elaborating on a more comprehensive view of the tourism experience and destination image. Guided by suggestions for more research in the relevant literature, this study examines the correlation between tourism experience, experiential destination image, tourism memory, satisfaction and loyalty and explores domestic and international tourists. The data were collected from tourists visiting the Algarve, Portugal, in 2021. A multi-group analysis determined the main differences between domestic and international tourists. The results show that the tourist experience has five dimensions: active learning, emotional engagement, passive entertainment, immersive escape, and aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, tourism experiences of both domestic and international tourists positively affect the cognitive image of the Algarve. There is a significant difference among domestic and international tourists regarding the impact of tourism memory on tourists' loyalty. Theoretical and managerial implications, limitations, and potential directions for future research are discussed.
- Can sudden fluctuations in tourism demand influence the earnings management practices of the hotel industry? Evidence from PortugalPublication . Gonçalves, Beatriz; Serra Coelho, Luís Miguel; Pinto, PatríciaThis study examines how sudden shifts in tourism demand affect the Earnings Management (EM) strategies of hotel firms, using Portuguese companies as the study context. This paper uses accounting data from 490 non-listed Portuguese hotel firms collected from the ORBIS database over the 2016-2021 period. The presence of EM practices is investigated using the methodology developed by Burgstahler and Dichev (1997), while panel data regression is used to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sample firms' EM practices. Portuguese hotel firms use EM practices upward or downward depending on their starting position. In general, these firms tend to manipulate results in order to avoid reporting losses, a practice they intensify when faced with a sharp decline in demand. In particular, this paper finds that, during the recent pandemic period, such companies have aggressively used the discretionary component of accruals to disclose higher results. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article exploring how a sudden decline in tourism demand affects the EM behaviour of firms operating in the hospitality sector. Our findings have important implications for such companies' stakeholders, especially investors and regulators.
- Certification, maintenance and decertification of standardised innovation management systems: Motivations, barriers and benefitsPublication . Mendes de Saboya , Liana; Candido, Carlos Joaquim Farias; Cesário, MarisaThe role of standardised innovation management systems (SIMS) in fostering organisational innovation has been largely overlooked in the literature. This study addresses this gap by investigating the certification, maintenance, and decertification of SIMS. Using a descriptive and inductive methodology, the research analyses primary data from 94 Portuguese organisations with certified SIMS. The findings reveal a strong prevalence of internal motivations for certification, low implementation obstacles, and significant benefits, suggesting that these firms have successfully internalised the SIMS standard into their innovation management processes. Maintenance motivations are also strong, particularly internal ones, which align well with the critical success factors for sustaining certification. The benefits of maintaining SIMS are substantial, particularly internal benefits, as initial external motivations for certification often evolve into internal maintenance motivations. Decertification motivations and propensity are weak among the sample firms. Expectations of negative performance impacts following potential decertification are also low, likely because these organisations have effectively internalised the SIMS standard. This study is the first to explore the maintenance and decertification of SIMS, providing evidence that SIMS can deliver substantial benefits, be efficiently maintained, and continuously enhance innovation and competitiveness. As a result, most organisations exhibit little interest in decertification. The findings offer significant contributions to research and provide actionable insights for practitioners, suggesting that innovation management systems can indeed be standardised with considerable benefits.
- Coagglomeration patterns in portuguese labour-intensive industries: complementarity and specialisation dynamicsPublication . Cesário, MarisaThe aim of this paper is to analyse the patterns of industrial agglomeration in Portugal in order to understand their underlying dynamics. Industries tend to be concentrated geographically, rather than due to random causes, natural advantages or Marshallian forces. Empirically, industry pairwise coagglomeration is measured using the Ellison and Glaeser (1997) metric, with the goal of understanding the complementarity versus specialisation dynamics behind the industrial geographic concentration in Portugal. It is concluded that the most prominent industrial clusters in Portugal are as follows: textiles and clothing, footwear and transport, each one having a different agglomeration dynamic. While some sectors tend to benefit more from the interdependencies along the value chain (meaning vertical industrial relationships, related to complementary dynamics), others are more vulnerable to labour pooling (more to do with horizontal industrial relationships and specialisation dynamics), and others to both. For policymakers, for instance, it is of great use to know exactly the right triggers as the success of any programme results from the suitability of the initiatives being financially supported.
- A critical analysis of the portuguese framework for entrepreneurship education considering the entreComp competence frameworkPublication . ESPINGARDEIRO BANHA, FRANCISCO MANUEL; Graça, André Rui; Góis, BeatrizThis paper critically examines the recently approved Portuguese Framework for Entrepreneurship Education (REE), in 2024, a key policy document aimed at implementing entrepreneurship education (EE) in compulsory public education. It addresses the historical context and current challenges of EE in Portugal, where participation in EE programmes has been limited. The REE is part of a broader initiative under the Citizenship Education subject, aiming to develop entrepreneurial skills among students as they progress through the education system. This article explores the evolution of EE frameworks, particularly focusing on the European Entrepreneurship Competence Framework (EntreComp), which has been widely adopted across Europe. It investigates how these frameworks, including the REE, contribute to the development of entrepreneurial competencies—skills that go beyond business creation to foster creativity, resilience, and problem-solving. The paper also highlights the benefits and challenges of implementing EE, including the need for tailored teaching materials and the importance of teacher support. By presenting Portugal’s recent efforts to integrate EE into its curriculum, this paper contributes to the international discourse on effective strategies for fostering entrepreneurial skills. It emphasises the role of such frameworks in overcoming barriers to EE, ensuring inclusivity, and addressing the evolving needs of global education systems in the face of rapid socio-economic changes.
- Destinationscape: an integrated and holistic conceptualizationPublication . Bender, Ana Carolina; Agapito, Dora Lúcia Miguel; Martins Guerreiro, Maria ManuelaDestinations are growingly acknowledged as dynamic entities requiring strategic resource management to provide value for stakeholders. In this sense, to be recognized as desirable places to visit, to live or to invest in, with a harmonious integration among the stakeholders, it is imperative to frame destinations’ distinctiveness using the experience marketing perspective. Through a combination of an integrative literature review and an academic panel with diverse expertise, this conceptual research aims to conceptualize and depict the environmental features composing destinationscape as a construct, considering the dynamic interplay of multiple ‘scapes’. As a result, the proposed conceptual framework comprises five second-order and 17 first-order dimensions. This research is expected to contribute to the theory around destination experience and experiencescape by offering a comprehensive view, where destinationscape emerges from continuous interactions between the destination’s external environment and its stakeholders. Consequently, this research contributes to destination competitiveness and governance by conceptualizing and providing a framework around destinationscape.
