- Comptes rendusPublication .
- Language policies and internationalization of higher educationPublication . Conceição, Manuel CélioIn the context of education for the global world, internationalization is a strategy and a goal of higher education (HE). In many cases, the conditions for carrying out internationalization are neglected in detriment of its economic and financial impact. The definition of appropriate language policies and their relation to the organization and functioning of institutions at all levels (teaching, research, transfer, governance, etc.) are constitutive aspects of internationalization. This definition considers the need to promote mobility and inclusion of different actors in HE and the need for competitive affirmation at local, national and international levels. Not only the conception of language policies must be clear, but the concept of language must be revisited within its relation to acquisition, construction and dissemination of knowledge in an ecological perspective of multilingual practices in HE, emphasizing that there is no science without languages and without linguistic diversity. In a contextually anchored complexity management framework, the relationship between language policies (or lack thereof) and pedagogical and methodological innovations is referred. This text emphasizes that language policies are essential in internationalization of HE. To achieve this purpose, a new concept of language and an integrated approach of language and knowledge/science are needed.
- Propositional density: cognitive impairment and agingPublication . Harrag, Chaimae; Sabil, Abdelkader; Conceição, Manuel Célio; Radvansky, Gabriel A.It is important to understand the relationship between cognitive abilities and language processing. Here, we explore a burgeoning area of research that harnesses semantic indices to predict cognitive impairment and track cognitive decline. One such index, propositional density, quantifies the information conveyed per language segment. Despite some variation stemming from methodological, sampling, and measurement differences, we suggest that propositional density has diagnostic and assessment value. This paper surveys existing studies that have used propositional density in the context of cognitive aging and impairment and offers some insights into the use of this index to highlight differences in cognition. We also suggest further explorations of basic research involving this concept, and some applications for assessing cognitive health.
- Too dense to comprehend—or perfectly packed? the divergent effects of propositional density on levels of text memoryPublication . Harrag, Chaimae; Sabil, Abdelkader; Radvansky, Gabriel A.; Conceição, Manuel CélioPropositional density, a semantic index, calculates the number of idea units within a sentence. While research has shown that propositional density can influence comprehension, its effects on different levels of memory representation, namely, the surface form, textbase, and situation model, remain unexplored. The current study examined how varying levels of propositional density of the context on which target sentences were embedded affected memory at these different levels of representation. A sample of 120 native English speakers read historical texts with either low or high propositional density and then completed recognition tasks targeting each level. Our results indicated that lower propositional density improved memory for the surface form, while higher density enhanced memory for the textbase. Propositional density had no meaningful effect on the situation model level. These findings suggest a complex relationship between propositional density and memory: Higher density appears to impair memory at the surface form level but may create a desirable difficulty to strengthen memory at the textbase level. However, comprehension, as reflected by the situation model level, remains largely unaffected, suggesting that global comprehension relies more on coherence-building and prior knowledge integration than on local semantic density. These findings inform models of discourse processing and have implications for text design, instructional strategies, and cognitive load management in reading comprehension.
- Guidelines for good practice in Science CommunicationPublication . Conceição, Manuel CélioScience communication (SciComm) is a discipline that aims to create methodological and communication frameworks to share scientific knowledge with a large range of possible audiences, from peers to the general public. The objective is to bridge the gap between complex scientific or technological knowledge and the identified target audience, making science understandable, accessible and engaging. Effective SciComm relies on several basic principles of communication. Clarity is the key; using simple language and terminology without sacrificing accuracy helps in conveying complex ideas. It may involve storytelling, framing scientific discoveries, or theories in narratives that can be linked to people's experiences or curiosity. Engagement is crucial to encourage interactions, questions, and discussions and thus foster deeper understanding. Furthermore, tailoring the message to the audience's interests and prior knowledge enhances the relatability of the scientific information.
- Multilingual realities and language policyPublication . Conceição, Manuel CélioThe growing complexity of linguistic environments in the twenty-first century reflects global processes such as urbanisation, migration, political transformation and educational reform. In an increasingly interconnected and linguistically diverse world, language functions not merely as a tool for communication but as a complex and contested site of identity, governance and global participation; language has become both a mirror and a driver of change.
- EditorialPublication . Conceição, Manuel CélioFifteen years after its first issue, the European Journal of Language Policy (EJLP) has a change of editor! I have the privilege to assume this function and I am very proud to succeed Mike Kelly, the editor since its inception. Our mission is to show the results of research on complexities of languages policies, meant broadly as languages beliefs, practices, choices and uses and their impact, fostering informed discussion and innovative thinking in the field. This issue features three papers and three interventions, offering diverse perspectives on language policy and its impact across different regions and institutions. Each contribution provides a deep dive into the specific linguistic and policy-related challenges of its respective context.
