- Can sudden fluctuations in tourism demand influence the earnings management practices of the hotel industry? Evidence from PortugalPublication . Gonçalves, Beatriz; Serra Coelho, Luís Miguel; Pinto, PatríciaThis study examines how sudden shifts in tourism demand affect the Earnings Management (EM) strategies of hotel firms, using Portuguese companies as the study context. This paper uses accounting data from 490 non-listed Portuguese hotel firms collected from the ORBIS database over the 2016-2021 period. The presence of EM practices is investigated using the methodology developed by Burgstahler and Dichev (1997), while panel data regression is used to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sample firms' EM practices. Portuguese hotel firms use EM practices upward or downward depending on their starting position. In general, these firms tend to manipulate results in order to avoid reporting losses, a practice they intensify when faced with a sharp decline in demand. In particular, this paper finds that, during the recent pandemic period, such companies have aggressively used the discretionary component of accruals to disclose higher results. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first article exploring how a sudden decline in tourism demand affects the EM behaviour of firms operating in the hospitality sector. Our findings have important implications for such companies' stakeholders, especially investors and regulators.
- Certification, maintenance and decertification of standardised innovation management systems: Motivations, barriers and benefitsPublication . Mendes de Saboya , Liana; Candido, Carlos Joaquim Farias; Cesário, MarisaThe role of standardised innovation management systems (SIMS) in fostering organisational innovation has been largely overlooked in the literature. This study addresses this gap by investigating the certification, maintenance, and decertification of SIMS. Using a descriptive and inductive methodology, the research analyses primary data from 94 Portuguese organisations with certified SIMS. The findings reveal a strong prevalence of internal motivations for certification, low implementation obstacles, and significant benefits, suggesting that these firms have successfully internalised the SIMS standard into their innovation management processes. Maintenance motivations are also strong, particularly internal ones, which align well with the critical success factors for sustaining certification. The benefits of maintaining SIMS are substantial, particularly internal benefits, as initial external motivations for certification often evolve into internal maintenance motivations. Decertification motivations and propensity are weak among the sample firms. Expectations of negative performance impacts following potential decertification are also low, likely because these organisations have effectively internalised the SIMS standard. This study is the first to explore the maintenance and decertification of SIMS, providing evidence that SIMS can deliver substantial benefits, be efficiently maintained, and continuously enhance innovation and competitiveness. As a result, most organisations exhibit little interest in decertification. The findings offer significant contributions to research and provide actionable insights for practitioners, suggesting that innovation management systems can indeed be standardised with considerable benefits.
- Coagglomeration patterns in portuguese labour-intensive industries: complementarity and specialisation dynamicsPublication . Cesário, MarisaThe aim of this paper is to analyse the patterns of industrial agglomeration in Portugal in order to understand their underlying dynamics. Industries tend to be concentrated geographically, rather than due to random causes, natural advantages or Marshallian forces. Empirically, industry pairwise coagglomeration is measured using the Ellison and Glaeser (1997) metric, with the goal of understanding the complementarity versus specialisation dynamics behind the industrial geographic concentration in Portugal. It is concluded that the most prominent industrial clusters in Portugal are as follows: textiles and clothing, footwear and transport, each one having a different agglomeration dynamic. While some sectors tend to benefit more from the interdependencies along the value chain (meaning vertical industrial relationships, related to complementary dynamics), others are more vulnerable to labour pooling (more to do with horizontal industrial relationships and specialisation dynamics), and others to both. For policymakers, for instance, it is of great use to know exactly the right triggers as the success of any programme results from the suitability of the initiatives being financially supported.
- Cognitive, affective and behavioural repercussions of perceived quality in tourism vocational education: insights from self-determination theoryPublication . Silva, Rejane Santana da; Quiroga Souki, Gustavo; Oliveira, Alessandro Silva de; Vieira, Luís Sérgio; Dionísio Serra, Manuel AntónioPurpose – This study aimed to investigate the influence of the perceived quality by students regarding their experiences in vocational schools in tourism, hospitality and food service on cognitive and affective responses (satisfaction, self-efficacy expectations and self-regulation strategies of motivation for learning - SRSML) and commitment (behavioural response). Design/methodology/approach – A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 454 students from twelve Turismo de Portugal IP-affiliated schools. The theoretical framework was rooted in Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and PLS-SEM, using ADANCO 2.3 software to test the proposed model. Findings – Perceived quality by students concerning their school experiences are socio-contextual factors that directly influence their satisfaction and self-efficacy expectations (cognitive and affective responses). Satisfaction and self-efficacy expectations positively affected SRSML. Finally, satisfaction and the SRSML positively impacted the students` commitment to schools (behavioural response). Originality/value – This study contributes to academia by comprehensively addressing 16 perceived quality dimensions within vocational education. It aligns with SDT, revealing that socio-contextual factors affect students’ cognitive, affective, and behavioural responses. Additionally, it demonstrates positive relationships between student satisfaction, self-efficacy expectations, SRSML, and students’ commitment to vocational education institutions. This study emphasises the multidimensional nature of perceived quality, urging educational institutions to address tangible and intangible dimensions to develop strategies to provide high-quality experiences, increasing students` satisfaction, self-efficacy expectations, motivation, and commitment.
- Competitiveness of portuguese montado ewe production systems among the european ewe production systemsPublication . Ferreira da Silva da Costa Freitas, Maria de Belém; Ventura-Lucas, Maria Raquel; Izquierdo, Lola; Deblitz, ClausThe number of ewes in Portugal registers a decrease since 1998. This decrease is felt particularly in the south of the country, which concentrates almost half of the existing ewes, mainly for meat production. One of the most important ewe production systems is the Montado, a High Nature Value ecosystem, occupying ca. 1.2 million ha in Portugal. The competitiveness of this system among the European ewe production systems is an important issue for the future of the Montado ecosystem. So, the objective of this paper is to analyze the ewe production systems in the Montado, using the agri benchmark database, and compare these systems with other European countries’ systems, ranking their competitiveness and e_ciency among other systems in the European Union. We concluded that this methodology facilitated an in-depth understanding not only of the competitiveness and e_ciency of ewe production systems in Portugal but also of their positioning regarding other systems in the European Union. The pattern of returns assures that these farms are competitive in the sense that they depend on the market on their decisions, and thus it is important that market values sheep products. Nevertheless, the diversification to other income sources would be a good option for the future sustainability of these farms and the opportunities and risks that these systems will deal with in a new green economy, with probable new functions and new opportunities for land, will be a challenge for the future.
- Customer value co-creation journey in hotels: customer perception and behaviour towards value co-creation in hotelsPublication . Sadighha, Jinous; Pinto, Patrícia; Guerreiro, ManuelaThe present thesis investigates the customer perception and behaviour towards value co-creation by exploring the associations between customer co-creation perception (conducts of service provider’s DART activities: dialogue, access, risk assessment, and transparency) and customer participation behaviour (information seeking, information sharing, responsible behaviour, and personal interaction), and the value co-creation process (co-production and value-in-use) and customer citizenship behaviour (feedback, advocacy, helping, tolerance). The first study of this thesis proposes a conceptual model for stimulating customer participation behaviour by joining the Equity Theory with the Co-Creation Theory. The results support that customer co-creation perception (hotels' DART activities) drives customer participation behaviour, which subsequently improves the co-production of a desired offering and experiences a personalised value-in-use during consumption. The second study proposes a conceptual model for customer behaviour in value co-creation by combining Equity Theory and Social Exchange Theory with the Co-Creation Theory. The results show that customer participation behavior is a prerequisite for the co-production of a desired offering and unique experience of value-in-use, which further increases customer citizenship behavior. The third study proposes a model for reciprocity of value between the hotel and the customer by joining Equity Theory, Social Exchange Theory, and Script Theory with Co-Creation Theory. The findings reveal that customer co-creation perception conducting hotel DART evokes customer participation behaviour that boosts value co-creation and enhances customer citizenship behaviour. Moreover, customer participation behaviour is more associated with value co-creation for first-time customers. In turn, customer co-creation perception shows a stronger relationship with value co-creation for repeat customers. The present thesis advances theoretical knowledge on value co-creation in the hotel sector, considering the interrelation between the service provider’s and customers’ contributions. It also provides an effective practical mechanism for the hotels to assist them in increasing their benefits from the reciprocity of the value in the competitive market.
- Decent work and burnout: the moderating role of career callingPublication . Faria, Liliana; Porto, SofiaBurnout is a critical issue in occupational mental health, and decent workis recognised as a key factor in promoting employee well-being. Drawingon the Psychology of Working Theory and Conservation of ResourcesTheory, this study examined whether Career Calling, as a personalresource, moderates the relationship between Decent Work andBurnout among Portuguese workers. A cross-sectional online surveywas conducted with 173 participants, and data were analyzed using thePROCESS macro. Results indicated a significant negative relationshipbetween Decent Work and Burnout, with Career Calling moderating thisassociation: its protective effect was stronger when decent workconditions were adequate. These findings highlight the importance ofprioritising decent work as the primary strategy to prevent burnout, whilesupporting the development of Career Calling as a complementaryresource to enhance resilience, engagement, and meaning in work.
- Discovering entrepreneurship competencies through problem-based learning in higher education studentsPublication . Sousa, Maria José; Costa, Joana MartinhoThe increase in student engagement in the learning process has driven educators to use more dynamic pedagogical methodologies. Several studies have shown evidence of increased interest in learning when real-world problems are integrated into the learning environment. This paper presents the competencies developed by higher education students through application of the problem-based learning (PBL) methodology in higher education courses. The research begins with the identification of a set of competencies developed by higher education students in other studies developed and reported in the last five years and includes them in a survey to analyze the level of development of those competencies when problem-based learning is applied in university courses. To identify the competencies developed by applying the problem-based learning methodology, the research employed a document analysis and a survey of the students that participated in the experimental application. The research questions “What are the competencies developed by students in problem-based learning?” and “Are the competencies identified by the students sufficiently learned in universities?” guided the study. The competencies found by the students were identified through a questionnaire given as an online survey to 76 students. The key outcome of the research is the identification in the bachelor courses of the competencies perceived as essential by students participating in the application of PBL in terms of their advancement.
