- Acoustic sensing techniques for the shallow water environment: inversion methods and experimentsPublication . Caiti, A.; Chapman, Ross; Hermand, J.-P.; Jesus, S. M.This volume contains the collection of papers from the second workshop on Experimental Acoustic Inversion Techniques for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment. The workshop theme followed the original concept of the first workshop, held in Carvoeiro, Portugal, in 1999, i.e., to focus on experiments and experimental techniques for acoustic sensing in the shallow ocean. More than forty leading international scientists were invited to meet in the picturesque town of St. Angelo on the island of Ischia, in June 2004, to discuss progress in the application of new experimental techniques for exploration and assessment of shallow water environments. Acoustic techniques provide the most effective means for remote sensing of ocean and sea floor processes, and for probing the structure beneath the sea floor. No other energy propagates as efficiently in the ocean: radio waves and visible light are severely limited in range because the ocean is a highly conductive medium. However, sound from breaking waves and coastal shipping can be heard throughout the ocean, and marine mammals communicate acoustically over basin scale distances.
- Advances in comparative endocrinologyPublication . Guerreiro, Pedro Miguel; Cardoso, João C.This is the 10th volume of Advances in Comparative Endocrinology, a series of books that collect the communications presented at the congresses of the Iberian Association for Comparative Endocrinology (AIEC). This round number marks roughly 20 years since the foundation of AIEC and the beginning of the biennial meetings organized by AIEC affiliated groups. In 2005, our Comparative Endocrinology and Integrative Biology group CEIB-CCMAR organized the 5th AIEC meeting and it was a pleasure to welcome the 12th AIEC Congress back again to Faro, Portugal, in 2019 (26-28 September). Volume X includes contributions resulting from plenary, keynote, oral or poster presentations, and authored by almost 150 senior or young scientists and students, which show the latest advances in the fields of reproduction, energy metabolism, genomics, evolution, stress, immune response and growth in both vertebrates and invertebrates. Studies range from fundamental questions on endocrinology to environmental challenges, animal production and welfare, or the mechanisms of disease, and reach beyond the Iberian borders. In addition to Portugal and Spain, the science presented here comes from institutions in Canada, Chile, France, Norway and USA. About 30% of the communications result from international cooperation, and over 55% were direct collaborations between institutions. AIEC aims to promote collaborations and its congresses are a privileged stage for networking.
- An overview of nonlinear identification and control with neural networks.Publication . Ruano, Antonio; Ferreira, P. M.; Fonseca, C. M.The aim of this chapter is to introduce background concepts in nonlinear systems identification and control with artificial neural networks. As this chapter is just an overview, with a limited page space, only the basic ideas will be explained here. The reader is encouraged, for a more detailed explanation of a specific topic of interest, to consult the references given throughout the text. Additionally, as general books in the field of neural networks, the books by Haykin [1] and Principe et al. [2] are suggested. Regarding nonlinear systems identification, covering both classical and neural and neuro-fuzzy methodologies, Reference 3 is recommended. References 4 and 5 should be used in the context of B-spline networks.
- Applications of polyoxometalates in medicine and their putative mechanisms of actionPublication . Authier, Tatiana; Aureliano, M.Polyoxometalates (POMs) are inorganic metal-oxide assemblies presenting a wide range of possible structure, size and metal-combination, as well as a high solubility in water and large redox chemistry. These properties are of a great interest in medicine and polyoxometalates are investigated to produce inorganic-drugs against virus, bacteria and tumour cells. Results showed that POMs, such as the PM-8 ([NH3Pr]6[Mo7O24]•3H2O) induced inhibition of tumour cell proliferation, whereas others POMs inhibit DNA- or RNA-virus activation or bacterial growth. While the mechanisms of action of the anti-viral and –bacterial activities are quite well understood, the same does not go for the anti-tumour activity. Nevertheless, the inhibition of tumour proliferation seems to be correlated with the inhibition of certain enzymes such as histone deacetylases and ecto-nucleotidases, or with the programmed death, apoptosis. In this report, these several hypothesis were approach, in a way to explain the anti-tumour, -bacterial and -viral activities of some polyoxometales, but nothing as yet been concluded and further studies are needed for a better understading.
- Are males specimens more adequate to detect anthropogenic impacts?Publication . Chicharo, AlexandraEstimates of the condition of aquatic organisms can be used to monitor the health or recovery of aquatic areas, under the ecohydrologic approach (Zalewski 2000, Chicharo et al. 2001). The ability of aquatic organisms to cope with environmental stress may be expensive in terms of energy and this cost of tolerance have negative counterparts in growth, reproduction, recruitment, susceptibility to disease, predation and physical disturbance (Jackson et al. 2002, Lloret et al. 2003, Oliva-Paterna et al. 2003). Density-dependent factors such competition and aggression can influence fitness, growth, reproduction, and survival (Hensor et al. 2005, Leitão 2006). Indices of the condition of organisms are valuable for managers of aquatic ecosystems for assessment of the health status of populations (Brown, Austin 1996).
- Atmospheric halogen and acid rains during the main phase of Deccan eruptions: magnetic and mineral evidencePublication . Font, Eric; Fabre, Sébastien; Nedelec, A.; Adatte, T.; Keller, G.; Veiga-Pires, C.; Ponte, J.; Mirão, José; Khozyem, H.; Spangenberg, J. E.; Gerta Keller, Andrew C. Kerr,Environmental changes linked to Deccan volcanism are still poorly known. A major limitation resides in the paucity of direct Deccan volcanism markers and in the geologically short interval where both impact and volcanism occurred, making it hard to evaluate their contributions to the mass extinction. We investigated the low-magnetic-susceptibility interval just below the iridium-rich layer of the Bidart (France) section, which was recently hypothesized to be the result of paleoenvironmental perturbations linked to paroxysmal Deccan phase 2. Results show a drastic decrease of detrital magnetite and presence of scarce akaganeite, a hypothesized reaction product formed in the aerosols derived from reaction of a volcanic plume with water and oxygen in the high atmosphere. A weathering model of the consequences of acidic rains on a continental regolith reveals nearly complete magnetite dissolution after ~31,000 yr, which is consistent with our magnetic data and falls within the duration of the Deccan phase 2. These results highlight the nature and importance of the Deccan-related environmental changes leading up to the end- Cretaceous mass extinction.
