- Company resilience in the european tourism industry: Evidence from the covid-19 pandemicPublication . Jesus, Carina Ramos; Coelho, Luís Miguel Serra; Ramos, Célia Maria QuitérioWhat influences the ability of tourism companies to withstand and recover from disruptive events like pandemics or wars? How can these businesses strengthen their resilience? Why do some profitable companies collapse while others thrive in the face of adversity? The resilience of tourism firms to disruptive events is a critical but underexplored topic. This thesis addresses these critical questions by examining the determinants of company resilience, its dynamic mechanisms across resistance and recovery phases, and the distinct resilience drivers of profit-making and loss-making firms. Through a systematic literature review and the application of a proposed resilience index, our research provides a unified framework for future research, advancing theoretical understanding of company resilience in the tourism industry and providing insights for managers and policymakers in this sector. Findings from our review highlight the dynamic, idiosyncratic, interdisciplinary and context-dependent nature of resilience, with clear evidence that human capital plays a pivotal role in the tourism industry’s ability to remain resilient. Furthermore, the empirical studies identify the factors driving the resilience of these firms to COVID-19, suggesting that their effects differ across countries, resilience stages, and types of firms. The results further underscore the potential consequences of Eurozone membership in the resilience of tourism firms, providing valuable insights into future preparedness strategies and policies. Moreover, the results contribute to the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities perspective by demonstrating the impact of firm-level resources across crisis phases. Together, these studies provide a comprehensive understanding of the resilience mechanisms of tourism firms, expanding the current understanding of how these firms can enhance their resilience, bridging theory and practice. Finally, this thesis provides actionable insights for academics, policymakers, and managers, discussing theoretical and practical implications, as well as future research directions, ultimately contributing to build a more sustainable and enduring tourism industry.
- Destination image: A comparative study between Obudu Mountain Resort and Tinapa, NigeriaPublication . Ivongbe, Jude Rukevwe; Agapito, Dora; Guerreiro, Maria ManuelaTourism is one of the socio-economic and cultural activities involving the movement of people within a country. This research focuses on a comparative study of the destination image of Obudu Mountain Resort and Tinapa Resort from the perspective of visitors. Destination image is a key element influencing the decision-making process and satisfaction, which can contribute to destination competitiveness. Destination image incorporates elements related to cognitive, affective, and conative components, shaping tourists' perceptions. Landscapes and cultural heritage diversity place Nigeria high in terms of tourism development potential, but comparative studies between specific destinations in the country are missing. Following a quantitative approach, an online questionnaire was implemented among visitors to Obudu Mountain Resort and Tinapa Resort. The findings indicate that whereas the two places are valued for their natural beauty, Tinapa would attract more repeat visitors because of recreational activities and facilities. Obudu would attract those who desired to enjoy a serene environment with rich cultural displays. Cognitive images were more related to modern infrastructural facilities and activities regarding Tinapa, while Obudu was more associated with quiet scenery. The affective images related to Tinapa include feelings of excitement and pleasure, while those related to Obudu encompass emotions of tranquillity and relaxation. Conative components results show that there is a higher revisit intention for Tinapa. Some tourism management recommendations for decision-makers are related to enhancing safety, diversifying activities, and exploiting cultural and natural features. For sustainable tourism to be a reality, a collaborative effort has to be made by the government, communities, and stakeholders. It improves destination image, hence attracting more visitors promoting sustainable tourism development by understanding tourist perceptions.
- Enhancement of tourists’ airport experiences using multisensorial designPublication . Azebeokhai, Blessing Isabella; Almeida, Cláudia Margarida Brito Ribeiro deThis dissertation research presents an innovative exploration into how multisensorial design can be utilized to significantly enhance the experience for tourists who pass through any given airport. via a targeted exam of Heathrow Airport, one of the world's most outstanding worldwide travel hubs, the study will inspect the significance of integrating visible, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, and tactile stimuli in creating extra excellent, long-lasting airport reviews. By highlighting airports' crucial role in influencing travellers' first and enduring perceptions of a place. While airport infrastructure is a tourist's first and last point of contact during their trip, it is also their primary means of transportation. (Rendeiro Martín-Cejas, 2006). As one of the leading international gateways, Heathrow offers a perfect environment for researching the possible effects of multisensorial design on visitor experiences. The overwhelming emphasis on efficiency and practicality in airport design frequently overshadows the value of sensory experiences. This study contends that multisensorial design, involving all senses, may considerably improve the airport atmosphere, increasing travellers' overall pleasure and perception. The primary goal is to find particular opportunities for implementing multisensorial design at airports to improve the visitor experience. This entails a detailed assessment of the present sensory environment and the creation of tailored design interventions. The research focuses on using comprehensive surveys to collect quantitative and qualitative statistics concerning travellers’ studies at Heathrow Airport, with particular recognition of the impact of multisensorial design elements. The survey design contains questions to assess contemporary delight tiers, sensory perceptions, and emotional responses to the airport environment. contributors can be selected from numerous pass-sections of Heathrow's international and home travellers to ensure a broad representation of reviews and perceptions. It expects multisensorial design components to improve emotional well-being, boost visitor satisfaction, and provide a more engaging and memorable airport experience. It attempts to create a framework for incorporating sensory design in airports, transforming how airport environments are designed and evolved. Focusing on Heathrow Airport offers crucial insights into how multisensorial design might be used to boost visitor experiences at airports. It contributes to fields such as psychology, design, and tourist management by providing a fresh perspective to airport design promoting human sensory experiences.
- Examining the impact of social media on tourist behaviour and experiencePublication . Jagdale, Dhananjay Sunil; Pedro, Ilda Maria HortaTourists are now a significant economic force and social media helps tourists plan their travels, and it also has a big impact on the tourism sector, which is an information-intensive economy. It helps to promote destinations, raise awareness, and influence their behaviour and decision-making process. Meanwhile, when it comes to creating jobs and boosting the economy, the tourism industry has a high potential, however, there is fierce competition in the tourism sector. Plans and initiatives of the government are seen to have changed tourist behavior. There is a lack of data about the impact of social media on the experiences and behaviours of tourists. Therefore, this study explored the impact of social media on tourist behaviour and experience. Considering this, this study evaluated how social media influences the tourist behaviour, experiences and their decision-making process to visit a destination, examined the role of social media, play on the tourist experiences and tourist decision making process. A quantitative approach was adopted through the distribution of questionnaires to individuals who have a desire to travel, already travelled or they are currently travelling. The data of 513 individuals was collected for the work. Based on binary logistic regression model, and the one-way ANOVA technique the data was evaluated using IBM SPSS Version 27 software. The study found that social media significantly impacts the tourist intention. The destinations’ positive reviews and recommendations on social media significantly influence tourists’ intention to travel to that destination. Therefore, the findings suggest that the tourist destinations’ management companies, hotels should prioritize branding and internet presence, focus more on good customer service, investing in interesting narratives and aesthetically pleasing material to make a significant emotional impact on prospective tourists, and maintain good online reviews. Effective management of internet reviews and recommendations can also improve the appeal of tourist destinations.

- Factors affecting residents´ support for sustainable tourism development in Cape VerdePublication . Santos, Edson Redy Moreira dos; Pereira, Luís Nobre; Pinto, PatríciaUnderstanding how locals react to the phenomenon of tourism in their community and the factors that influence them to demonstrate support are major areas of discussion within the resident perception and attitude study. To acquire a more in-depth comprehension of this phenomenon, three objectives are presented: (1) to develop and validate a new Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale (RETS 2.0), by integrating economic and environmental empowerment dimensions and abbreviate the current RETS; (2) to examine the relationship between imperialism, empowerment, and support for sustainable tourism development (SSTD), and to analyze if residents are able to become empowered through an imperialistic tourism development model; and (3) to analyze the effect of empowerment on benefits and costs of tourism impact, and SSTD within an all-inclusive context. These objectives aim to contribute to the existing knowledge in three unique ways. First, the study contributes to literature by developing and validating a new version of the Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale: RETS 2.0. The revised scale incorporates economic and environmental empowerment dimensions. A pilot study surveyed a sample 233 samples from Boa Vista, followed by the primary study that collected dat from a sample of 509 residents on Sal Island. With the ability to assess the economic and non-economic elements of tourism, RETS 2.0 provides a deeper comprehension of residents’ role in the sustainability of tourism, as well as understanding the current challenges of climate change, economic instability, and active local engagement, present in tourism communities. Second, the study examines the relationship between perceptions of imperialism, empowerment, and SSTD. A blend of Weber’s Theory of Formal and Substantive Rationality (WTFSR) and Institutional Theory is used. Empirical data from a sample of 341 residents allow to estimate the proposed model. Statistical analysis using IBM AMOS tests 341 samples. Results reveal that the relationship between perception of imperialism and empowerment is insignificant. Despite this, empowered residents demonstrated more SSTD. Findings suggest that, although such practices are evident within vulnerable communities, institutions should cater to locals’ needs and aspirations. Third, the study investigates the effect of empowerment on benefits and costs of tourism, and SSTD within an all-inclusive tourism context. WTFSR and Social Exchange Theory are used. Data collected through a face-to face survey in Cape Verde (n=341) was used to estimate the proposed model with the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) mehod. SmartPLS software is used to test 341 samples. While findings indicate a positive effect of empowerment on benefits and SSTD, effect of empowerment on costs of tourism is not supported. In addition, results reveal that only PAIR Benefits have a moderating effect of relationship between empowerment and SSTD. These findings highlight the importance of engaging residents in tourism development and promoting inclusivity for the sustainability of tourism.
